This creates an exciting opportunity for an experienced operational leader to join the Open Space & Maintenance team and play an important role in how Council’s fleet and urban maintenance services continue to evolve.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager Open Space & Maintenance, you will provide leadership across Council’s Fleet, Workshop and Urban Maintenance functions, with responsibility for a diverse in-house workforce of approximately 20 employees.
You will oversee services spanning Council’s fleet and plant, workshop operations, drainage and footpath maintenance, signage, street sweeping and public amenity cleansing.
A key focus of the role will be people leadership. You will support and develop your supervisors, create clarity around expectations and priorities, and continue building a collaborative and accountable culture across the depot.
Alongside the operational leadership, you will bring a strategic lense to how these services are planned and managed. This includes strengthening governance, systems and performance reporting, managing risk and compliance, and identifying opportunities to improve service delivery as the municipality continues to grow.
Fleet will form an important part of the portfolio, with Council managing approximately 450 vehicles and plant across operational, pool, commuter and private-use arrangements. You will oversee long-term fleet and replacement planning, workshop capability, lifecycle management and investment decisions to ensure Council’s fleet remains safe, compliant and financially sustainable.
The role will also provide strategic oversight across urban maintenance, ensuring appropriate service standards, maintenance programs and systems are in place across drainage, footpaths, signage, street sweeping and cleansing.
About You
We are looking for an experienced operational leader who combines strong people leadership with the ability to take a broader view of service delivery, risk and continuous improvement.
Experience leading operational services within a complex environment will be important, with exposure to fleet, asset management or municipal maintenance highly regarded. This is less about being a technical specialist across every area and more about bringing strong leadership and a broader strategic perspective.
Strong people leadership will be central to success. An approachable, practical and collaborative style, combined with experience developing supervisors and operational teams, managing performance and creating clear accountability, will be highly valued.
A sound understanding of fleet or asset lifecycle management, operational governance, safety and risk will be important, along with the commercial awareness to manage budgets, procurement and external service providers. Experience with heavy vehicle or Chain of Responsibility requirements will be advantageous, or alternatively the ability to quickly develop this knowledge.
Strong communication and stakeholder skills will complement the ability to balance day-to-day operational priorities with longer-term planning and continuous improvement.
Relevant tertiary qualifications in asset management, business, engineering, leadership, governance, project management or a related discipline, combined with substantial relevant experience, will be required.
