Coordinator – Stormwater & Drainage

Mackay Regional Council | Infrastructure Planning | $130,539 to $150,823 plus super

Public Sector People are partnering with Mackay Regional Council to appoint a Coordinator – Stormwater & Drainage — a critical leadership role responsible for shaping the long-term planning, renewal and resilience of stormwater and drainage infrastructure across the region.

This is an opportunity to influence strategic infrastructure decisions in a growing regional Council while leading a technically strong civil team delivering capital programs and asset strategies.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Coordinator Built Infrastructure & Natural Assets, you will lead the strategic planning and delivery of Council’s stormwater and drainage infrastructure across both urban and rural environments.

You will ensure alignment between long-term asset strategies, capital works programs, legislative compliance and environmental sustainability objectives.
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the development and review of long-term stormwater asset management plans
  • Coordinating capital works programs and future investment strategies
  • Providing high-level technical advice in stormwater design, flood mitigation and drainage renewal
  • Managing and mentoring engineers and technical staff
  • Overseeing project prioritisation using condition data, risk analysis and service level frameworks
  • Leading business case development and funding proposals
  • Ensuring compliance with legislation, Australian Standards and Council policies
  • Driving innovation in sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure solutions
This role operates under broad direction and carries significant accountability for resilience, growth planning and infrastructure performance across the region.

About You

You are a technically credible civil infrastructure leader with strong stormwater and drainage expertise, supported by proven team leadership capability.

Council is seeking a leader who can balance deep technical knowledge with strategic planning, budget oversight and program delivery.
You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Significant experience in stormwater and drainage planning and delivery
  • Strong understanding of asset lifecycle planning and risk-based prioritisation
  • Experience with hydraulic modelling tools (e.g. TUFLOW) and GIS platforms
  • Demonstrated capability managing capital works programs and budgets
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills across consultants, contractors and regulatory agencies
Local government experience will be highly regarded, particularly within complex growth or flood-prone environments.

Why Join Mackay Regional Council?

Mackay Regional Council manages approximately $4.5 billion in assets across a region of more than 120,000 residents. With sustained growth and increasing climate resilience demands, stormwater infrastructure plays a pivotal role in protecting community safety and supporting development.

This role offers:
  • Strategic influence over long-term stormwater and drainage investment
  • Leadership within a newly aligned Infrastructure Planning structure
  • Exposure to growth planning and environmental sustainability initiatives
  • Competitive Level 8 package (plus superannuation)
  • Relocation assistance available
Mackay offers a strong coastal lifestyle, growing economy and the scale and complexity of a major regional council.
