Traffic & Investigations Coordinator

Mackay Regional Council | Infrastructure Planning | Level 7 ($118,872 – $130,539)

Public Sector People are proud to partner with Mackay Regional Council to recruit a Traffic & Investigations Coordinator.

Whether you're already leading a small technical team or you're an experienced Traffic Engineer, Transport Planner or Civil Engineer ready to take the next step, this is an opportunity to move into your first formal leadership position within one of Queensland's fastest-growing regional councils.

If you've been waiting for the opportunity to step beyond technical delivery and begin leading people, influencing decisions and helping shape the future of a growing transport network, this could be the role you've been looking for.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Executive Manager Infrastructure Planning, you'll lead a small team responsible for traffic investigations, operational traffic management, heavy vehicle access, road corridor governance and transport compliance across the Mackay region.

Importantly, this role isn't about having decades of management experience.
It's about finding someone with strong technical capability, sound judgement and the desire to lead.

You'll be supported by an experienced leadership team who are committed to helping the successful candidate continue to develop as a leader while building on the technical experience they've already gained.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to move from Senior Engineer or Senior Technical Officer into a leadership role without losing the technical aspects they enjoy.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll coordinate a broad range of operational and strategic traffic functions including:
  • Leading traffic investigations and operational traffic management
  • Reviewing Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS)
  • Managing heavy vehicle access and road corridor approvals
  • Providing technical advice on traffic engineering and transport planning
  • Supporting road safety initiatives and transport investigations
  • Leading and mentoring a small technical team
  • Working closely with internal stakeholders, developers, consultants and the community
  • Helping improve how traffic services are delivered across the region.

Who We're Looking For

We're deliberately keeping an open mind.

You might currently be working as a:
  • Senior Traffic Engineer
  • Traffic Engineer
  • Transport Planner
  • Civil Engineer
  • Traffic Operations Engineer
  • Road Safety Engineer
  • Development Engineer
  • Transport Planning Officer
  • Traffic Management Engineer
  • Senior Technical Officer
  • Project Engineer
  • Corridor Management Officer
  • Road Network Engineer

Equally, you may already be supervising a small team and be looking for a broader leadership opportunity.

Candidates from local government, Transport and Main Roads, engineering consultancies, infrastructure contractors and the private sector are all encouraged to apply.

You Don't Need to Tick Every Box

If you have strong traffic or transport experience but haven't yet managed a team, we'd still love to hear from you.
What's most important is that you can demonstrate:
  • Strong technical credibility
  • Sound decision making
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement
  • The ability to mentor and support others
  • A genuine desire to develop into a people leader

Leadership can be taught. Technical credibility and the right attitude are much harder to find.

Why Mackay?

Mackay Regional Council is investing heavily in strengthening its Infrastructure Planning team and this role offers genuine career progression within a supportive leadership environment.

You'll enjoy:
  • A genuine opportunity to step into leadership
  • Support and mentoring from experienced managers
  • Diverse technical work across traffic operations, investigations and transport planning
  • Exposure to major infrastructure and development projects
  • Long-term career growth within local government
  • A coastal lifestyle in one of Queensland's most liveable regional cities.
