Data Governance Engineer – Greenfield site/Opportunity for career development – Build a Data Management team - Sydney or Melbourne - $170,000
Are you a skilled data engineer with technical data governance experience and a passion for improving data quality, building governance frameworks, and driving enterprise-wide data literacy?
This newly created role sits within a growing data team at a well-known organisation embarking on a Greenfield data transformation. With a strong focus on Microsoft Purview and Copilot, you'll play a central role in establishing and maintaining the organisation's data management foundations—laying the groundwork for scalable analytics and AI. This is role which focuses on stakeholder management and inspiring and bringing people along on the data management journey.
What you’ll be doing:
- Leading the build and maintenance of a business-wide data catalogue, ensuring consistency across systems
- Creating and evolving a data dictionary that supports self-service and clear understanding of key metrics
- Designing and implementing a Data Stewardship model, partnering with SMEs across the business
- Championing data quality initiatives, supporting the development of data profiling, lineage, and validation pipelines
- Collaborating closely with Data Engineering and BI teams to embed governance practices into the data lifecycle
- Driving data literacy and ownership across the business, supporting stakeholders with training and guidance
- Supporting the implementation of Microsoft Purview and maximising its integration with Copilot for discovery and governance workflows
- Working in a Greenfield environment to influence tooling, process and data governance culture from the ground up
What we’re looking for:
- A background in Data Engineering or technical data roles (strong SQL required; Python desirable)
- Demonstrated experience in data governance, metadata/catalogue management, or data quality frameworks
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Fabric, or similar tools (e.g. Collibra, Alation, Informatica)
- Understanding of how to build and maintain data dictionaries, business glossaries, and stewardship models
- Strong stakeholder engagement and the ability to work cross-functionally to embed best practice
- Exposure to Microsoft Copilot, or strong interest in automation/AI-assisted governance
- Experience in a retail or consumer-facing organisation is a bonus but not essential
