The Opportunity
An established Melbourne-based Tier 3 builder and developer is looking to appoint an experienced Design Coordinator to join its growing construction team.
With a strong pipeline of projects across social and affordable housing, build-to-rent developments and multi-residential apartments, the business is currently delivering a number of projects throughout Melbourne's eastern suburbs, typically ranging between $30M and $60M.
This is a predominantly site-based position, working across multiple projects and reporting directly into the Construction team. You will play an important role in bridging the gap between the architectural design team, consultants and site-based construction teams, ensuring designs are coordinated, buildable and delivered in line with project requirements.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an architectural background who has developed strong construction knowledge and enjoys being involved in the practical delivery of projects.
The Role
Working closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, architects, consultants and subcontractors, your responsibilities will include:
- Coordinating architectural and consultant documentation across multiple live construction projects.
- Acting as the link between the design team and site-based construction teams.
- Reviewing architectural drawings, specifications and shop drawings to identify discrepancies, clashes and potential buildability issues.
- Managing RFIs, design queries and technical issues raised by the construction team and subcontractors.
- Coordinating design amendments and ensuring updated documentation is communicated to relevant stakeholders.
- Reviewing subcontractor shop drawings and ensuring they align with architectural intent and project requirements.
- Working closely with subcontractors to resolve technical and design-related queries on site.
- Identifying design inconsistencies, omissions and potential construction issues before they impact programme or delivery.
- Attending site meetings and coordinating with the wider project team to ensure design matters are progressing.
- Monitoring design deliverables and ensuring information is issued in line with construction programmes.
- Supporting the Construction team with technical advice and practical design solutions throughout the build.
We are looking for someone who understands both the design process and what it takes to deliver a project on site.
To be considered, you will ideally have:
- A degree or qualification in Architecture, Architectural Technology or a related discipline.
- Previous experience working as a Design Coordinator, Design Manager, Project Architect or similar within the construction industry.
- Experience working on multi-residential, apartment, social housing or commercial construction projects.
- Strong ability to interpret and interrogate architectural drawings, specifications and construction documentation.
- Experience reviewing and coordinating subcontractor shop drawings.
- Previous exposure to construction sites and an understanding of construction sequencing and buildability.
- Confidence communicating with subcontractors, Site Managers, Project Managers, architects and consultants.
- The ability to identify design issues, find practical solutions and follow them through to resolution.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and competing priorities.
