Local Council - Western Regional Fringe, Melbourne

$98,345 - $110,043 p/a + 12% superannuation
We are looking for an experienced Finance Team Leader to join a progressive local government organisation on Melbourne's western regional fringe on an initial 3-month contract, with a genuine view to permanency for the right candidate.
This is a hands-on coordination role with real scope to make an impact - leading a small finance team, driving reporting quality and compliance, and acting as a trusted business partner to managers and leaders across the organisation.
Location is north-west 1.5hrs from Melbourne CBD and 70kms from Melton.
About the Role
- Lead and coordinate core financial management functions - budgeting, forecasting, monthly/quarterly/annual reporting, and variance analysis - ensuring accuracy, compliance with accounting standards, and audit readiness
- Oversee general ledger integrity, asset accounting (capitalisation, WIP reconciliation), grants governance, and statutory returns in alignment with local government legislative requirements
- Provide high-quality financial analysis and business partnering support to managers and the ELT, translating complex financial data into clear, practical insights for non-financial stakeholders
- Lead continuous improvement across finance processes and internal controls, identifying financial risks early and supporting long-term financial sustainability planning
- Provide day-to-day functional leadership and supervision to the Finance team (Financial Accountant and Accounts Payable Officer), supporting capability development and a high-performing team culture
What We're Looking For
- Previous experience in Local Government, Public Sector, Healthcare, or Education
- Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum 2-3 years in a similar finance coordination or team leader role
- Demonstrated proficiency in TechOne (Technology One) financials is mandatory- the role requires hands-on system configuration, general ledger management, and reporting module capability within a local government environment
