Public Sector People are partnering with Mackay Regional Council to appoint a Senior Engineer – Stormwater & Drainage, a key technical role responsible for leading the planning and delivery of complex stormwater, drainage and flood mitigation infrastructure initiatives across the Mackay region.
This role sits within Council’s Infrastructure Planning program and plays a critical part in shaping long-term infrastructure investment, improving flood resilience and supporting the continued growth of the region through strategic capital planning and technical leadership.
The Role
Working under limited direction and reporting to the Coordinator Stormwater & Drainage, this position will lead the planning, prioritisation and delivery of complex stormwater and drainage infrastructure projects across urban and rural environments.
This is a highly technical and strategic role focused on long-term planning, infrastructure optimisation, asset performance and flood mitigation outcomes rather than day-to-day operational maintenance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading stormwater and drainage infrastructure planning and capital works programs
- Managing complex stormwater and flood mitigation projects from concept through to delivery
- Preparing technical reports, business cases and investment recommendations
- Undertaking drainage investigations, hydraulic assessments and infrastructure prioritisation
- Supporting long-term asset management planning and renewal strategies
- Managing consultants, contractors and procurement activities
- Providing technical advice to senior leadership on high-risk drainage and stormwater matters
- Contributing to continuous improvement across stormwater planning frameworks, standards and delivery methodologies
- Engaging with stakeholders including developers, consultants, contractors, government agencies and the community
About You
You are an experienced civil or stormwater engineer who enjoys solving complex infrastructure challenges and delivering practical long-term solutions that positively impact growing communities.
Council is seeking someone with strong technical capability combined with the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders and contribute to strategic infrastructure planning outcomes.
You will bring:
- Degree qualifications in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Significant experience across stormwater and drainage infrastructure projects
- Strong knowledge of flood mitigation, drainage planning and asset management principles
- Experience using GIS, AutoCAD and hydrologic/hydraulic modelling software such as TUFLOW or similar
- Experience preparing business cases, scopes of work and technical reports
- Strong project management and stakeholder engagement capability
- Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, legislation and procurement processes
- Experience managing competing priorities, budgets and complex infrastructure programs
- Experience within local government or infrastructure planning environments will be highly regarded.
