About the Role
The Team Leader Statutory Planning is a key leadership role within the Planning Services team, responsible for overseeing the delivery of statutory planning services and ensuring high-quality outcomes across a diverse and complex portfolio of applications.
Working alongside three Team leaders you will be responsible for a maximum of eight planning officers. Your key focus is to manage the assessment and determination of planning permit applications and other statutory approvals, ensuring they are delivered in accordance with the Planning & Environment Act, the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme and Council policy.
A major focus of the role is team leadership and performance — mentoring staff, providing technical guidance and fostering a high-performing, collaborative team environment. You will represent council at VCAT where required and play a key role in managing more complex or sensitive applications as and when required by the team.
The position has a strong emphasis on customer experience and continuous improvement. You will contribute to reviewing and enhancing how Planning Services engages with the community, improving systems and processes, and driving more efficient and effective service delivery. About You
This role is well suited to someone ready to take the next step in their leadership career, with a clear understanding of the transition from individual technical expertise to leading, guiding and supporting others to achieve shared outcomes. With demonstrated experience leading and mentoring staff, you are comfortable supporting and developing a team while maintaining a strong focus on performance, accountability and service quality.
You are an experienced planner with strong technical expertise and a solid understanding of planning legislation, within a local government environment. You are confident managing complex planning matters and providing clear, practical advice across a range of stakeholders.
With demonstrated experience leading and mentoring staff, you are comfortable supporting and developing a team while maintaining a focus on performance, accountability and service quality. You bring a balanced approach, combining sound technical judgement with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster and build a positive team culture.
This role plays a key part in the leadership group of the planning directorate. You are motivated by improving processes, enhancing customer experience and contributing to better planning outcomes. Your ability to navigate competing priorities, manage stakeholder expectations and drive continuous improvement will set you up for success in this role.
